About US
The Medical Research Council MRC UK is an internationally recognisedcentre
of excellence with dominant research themes in the areas of HIV and emerging
infections, vaccines and immunity, and chronic diseases and cancer. Through a
multidisciplinary approach, intersecting basic science, epidemiological
research, social-behavioural research and the conduct of new intervention
evaluation studies, the Unit contributes knowledge on changing epidemics and
diseases, the evaluation of innovative health care options, treatment and
prevention and the development of health policy and practice in Africa and
worldwide. Following the signing of strategic transfer agreements between the
London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine LSHTM and the Medical
Research Council MRC UK, the Unit formally joined LSHTM on 1st February
2018. The exciting new partnership will boost research capacity into current
and emerging health issues in Africa and throughout the world. The Unit is
based at the UVRI Entebbe campus with established outposts in Kalungu, Masaka,
Wakiso and Kampala Districts.
About the study
The Thanzi la Onse Health of All research programme, an international
partnership between researchers in Uganda, Malawi and the UK, funded by the UK
Research and Innovation GlobalvChallenges Research Fund, aims to improve
population health and reduce health inequality in Malawi, Uganda and other
countries in Southern and East Africa. Methods of health technology assessment
HTA and economic evaluation are being used to inform a range of resource
allocation decisions relating to health. However, there is no EQ-5D 3L or 5L
value set available for any of these countries. Health economics and clinical
research conducted in this region using the EQ-5D-3L have to use value sets
derived in other countries, for example the Zimbabwean EQ-5D-3L value set. To
date, there is only one published EQ-5D-5L value set in Africa - the - the
Ethiopian value set, so most studies using EQ-5D-5L have to rely on the
preferences of the Ethiopian setting or in another continent. The EQ-5D
reflects the social preferences of the population and this is expected to
differ between countries. Therefore, the local EQ-5D value set is preferred to
support decision making. As one important component in the health economics
theme within the Thanzi la Onse programme, we aim to develop the EQ-5D-5L
value set for Uganda. It
