About the Organization

Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI) is an independently governed institute within the College of Health Sciences at Makerere University and has the mission “To strengthen health systems in Africa, with a strong emphasis on infectious diseases, through research and capacity development.” IDI has operations across Uganda as well as in a number of other African countries and has a staffing of over 1,000 managing multiple projects in research, clinical services, public health and training.

Job Summary

The African Center of Excellence in Bioinformatics and Data-Intensive Sciences (ACE) Uganda is offering two (2) internship opportunities supported by the SHEDS project in partnership with the Institute for Global Health Sciences (IGHS), University of California San Francisco (UCSF). Interns will participate in real-world, data-driven health research projects while building practical skills.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Learning how to program in any of the following languages: R, Python, Bash scripting
  • Cleaning, analyzing, and visualizing health data using R, Python, or Bash scripting.
  • Using bioinformatics tools to align DNA sequences, identify genetic variants or perform basic statistical analysis on genomic data.
  • Developing pipelines for bioinformatics analysis.
  • Reviewing and summarizing relevant literature to inform project activities.
  • Participating in team meetings and delivering presentations on progress.
  • Submitting monthly progress reports and a final internship report.
  • Contributing to ongoing ACE projects.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry, Biomedical Laboratory Technology, Biotechnology or a related field.
  • A recent graduate (within the last year) with a Bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry, Biomedical Laboratory Technology, Biotechnology or a related field from a recognized university.
  • Demonstrated interest in the application of health data science or bioinformatics or structural biology in human genomics.
  • Willingness to learn and contribute in a multidisciplinary environment.
  • Plans to pursue a career in health data science or a related field.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
