About UNHCR
The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees was established on December 14, 1950 by the United Nations General Assembly. UNHCR’s mandate under the Statute of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees is to lead and co-ordinate action for international protection to refugees; seek permanent solutions for the problems of refugees and safeguard refugee rights and well-being. UNHCR has an additional mandate concerning issues of statelessness, as it is given a designated role under Article 11 of the 1961 Convention on the Reduction of Statelessness.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Monitor political, social, and economic developments affecting the protection environment; advise senior management.
- Ensure protection strategies address needs of women, children, persons with disabilities, and other vulnerable groups.
- Coordinate promotion of international refugee law and IDP policies across sectors.
- Implement and monitor programs with an Age, Gender, and Diversity (AGD) approach.
- Provide legal advice and ensure access to documentation (e.g., birth certificates).
- Intervene in cases of refoulement, expulsion, or other protection incidents.
- Support durable solutions (repatriation, local integration, resettlement).
- Advocate for resource allocation to address protection gaps.
- Facilitate conflict resolution among communities and authorities.
- Maintain field presence through missions and reporting.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience
Required:
- Bachelor’s degree in Law, International Relations, Social Sciences, or related field.
- 3+ years of experience in refugee protection or related roles.
- Fluency in English.
- Field experience in humanitarian settings.
Desirable:
- Knowledge of UN policies and procedures.
- Strong analytical and interpersonal skills.
- Proficiency in MS Office.
